Basic ADA-Friendly Steps for Summer Vacation Rentals

  • Clear Pathways: Ensure walkways, entrances, and doorways are wide and clutter-free for mobility devices. Temporary threshold ramps or low-profile mats can be helpful.
  • Accessible Bathroom Basics: Install grab bars near toilets and showers if possible. A shower chair and handheld showerhead are simple additions that make a big difference.
  • Stable Flooring: Choose firm, smooth flooring (not plush rugs or uneven decking). Non-slip surfaces are ideal, especially in beach climates.
  • Thoughtful Entry: If you don’t have a full ADA ramp, a gently sloped entry or temporary ramp can still assist wheelchair users or those with walkers.
  • Lighting & Visibility: Good outdoor lighting along paths and entrances helps guests with limited vision or stability. Avoid step-downs that aren’t clearly marked.
  • Seating & Rest Areas: Include shaded, comfortable spots outdoors and along walkways where someone might want a break from the heat or walking.
  • Simple Communication: In your rental listing, describe the layout clearly. Let guests know what’s accessible or what extra tools (ramp, chair, etc.) are available upon request.
